Can guinea pigs eat apricots?

can-guinea-pigs-eat-apricotsI think that apricots have to be one of my favorite fruits ever! So I was wondering: can guinea pigs eat apricots?

Yes they can!

Guinea pigs can eat apricots once or twice a week in small amounts but not too much due to the high sugar content. Make sure to remove the stone!

How funny. I would never have thought to give a guinea pig an apricot! I just know that my dog isn’t supposed to eat them, but that goes for most pitted fruits. I guess that has more to do with being a choking hazard that anything else. Now I have something that I can do with some of the leftover apricots that fall off the tree!

I always thought these were considered to be poison to guinea pigs, gerbils, hamsters, ect. I guess you learn something new every day! Now when you mention sugar, should that be limited in general in a piggy’s diet? These two seem to really love apples, pears, and oranges. I don’t want to over do it though!

Yes definitely limit their fruit to twice a week at the most. Too much sugar can cause loose stools and the acid from the fruit can give them mouth sores.
